BLUE MORPH is a site-specific interactive installation
that uses nanoscale images and sounds derived from the
metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly.
Fringe is pleased to present this art-science
collaboration between media artist Victoria Vesna and
nanoscientist James Gimzewski. Digital photographic
images related to the installation complete the show.

Leaving viability aside for a moment, I would like to see a return to high quality art, embracing all the wonders of technology and science, delivered at a price that reflects the time and effort the artist has put in. Call me old fashioned. Just as one would expect to pay for a hand-crafted piece of furniture or a designer dress or a beautifully printed photograph. Rather than pandering to mass media, why not also produce higher resolution audio - maybe on DVD since that’s a format most people can engage with without having to buy new equipment? Combine this with lovingly produced artwork which, if a printed option is too expensive, can at least be downloaded.

Collectors items are becoming a way to escape the turmoil. It makes a lot of sense to subsidise the production of an expensive format for those who really appreciate quality and collectibility by allowing a wider audience to cough up a minimal amount for the fundamental elements.

Some have tried. For instance, Magne Furuholmen (A-ha) released and sold 300 copies of a special 10” vinyl picture disc with hand-painted original sleeves, accompanied by a CD containing all the songs, a poster and a documentary charting the creation of the artwork. The package sold at 100 Euros a piece. Afterwards, all songs were made available on-line for free via MySpace. Hats off to a bold approach which effectively encouraged each serious fan to also become a kind of personal investor.

“How, exactly, do you spend five years laboring in the dark jungles of music licensing, carefully trying to bring free and legal music downloads to the masses, only to turn your hugely-publicized launch event into a byword for “fiasco” by not actually having the licenses… and still launching your service anyway? Qtrax could tell you, and today, it did. Allan Klepfisz, the company’s CEO, showed up at Digital Forum East in New York for a 40-minute chat about the launch that wasn’t.” —Qtrax: The free music is coming. Trust us.

“This field has 1,301 florescent bulbs planted in it, and they’re all glowing. They aren’t plugged into anything, however; they’re powered solely from the magnetic fields produced by the power lines above. It’s all a large art project by Richard Box, and if you’re really interested in it you can order a DVD of the whole thing from him. If you’re cheaper and less interested, just peruse our gallery for the cool shots.” —

“Five hundred top members of the music business gathered today in New York to hear that “music 1.0 is dead.” Ted Cohen, a former EMI exec who used the phrase, opened the Digital Music Forum East by pleading with the industry to be wildly creative with new business models but not to “be desperate” during this transitional period. But what is music transitioning to? No one seemed quite sure, except to say that it won’t look much like the music business of the last several decades.” —Music exec: “Music 1.0 is dead.”

“Favreau also had encouraging words for wannabe directors. Toward the end of the panel discussion, another attendee asked if he had any advice for aspiring filmmakers, and Favreau said technology has transformed the landscape of independent film. “Now you can get a digital video camera and shoot high-quality footage, a Macintosh laptop to put it all together, and then use the Internet to distribute it yourself online,” he said. “If what you do is good, you will get noticed.” —Favreau: Technology has transformed indie film landscape | Tech news blog - CNET News.com

“A civil but tense tone prevailed at today’s Federal Communications Commission’s hearing on how to address concerns that Comcast and other ISPs degrade P2P traffic. Comcast Executive Vice President David L. Cohen was the star of the show, and he knew it. “It’s a pleasure to be here as a participant and hopefully not the main course for your meal,” Cohen told all five Commissioners and a lively audience during the event’s first panel discussion, held at Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.” —Comcast, net neutrality advocates clash at FCC hearing

You’d think that if you filed a lawsuit and the defendant failed to show up, getting a default judgment entered would be a slam-dunk. That hasn’t been the case for the RIAA, as a federal judge has denied a default judgment motion filed by the labels in a case involving a Connecticut resident.

Atlantic Records, et al. brought suit against Christopher Brennan just over a year ago. Brennan failed to respond to the complaint, never appearing in court to answer the copyright infringement charges. After an entry of default was entered on August 6, 2007, the RIAA moved the court for a default judgment, which Judge Janet Bond Arterton denied in a ruling earlier this month.

“A new bill proposed in the Tennessee state senate aims to reduce copyright infringement at universities by forcing the schools to become anti-piracy enforcers. If passed, the bill would require universities that receive funding from the state to analyze all traffic passing through their networks in order to track down and stop infringing activity. Under the proposed bill, universities could lose state funding if they refuse to implement network analysis systems or if they receive ten or more infringement complaints from content owners during a single year.” —Tennessee legislation would turn schools into copyright cops

“A new patent filed by Apple is raising speculation over what may be in store for the future of podcasting. Podcasting began maturing quickly on its own a few years ago, but Apple’s embracing of the grassroots movement by giving it an outlet in the iTunes Store in mid-2005 accelerated the process. If this patent doesn’t get filed away like so many others, it could be a sign that Apple is readying new tools for podcast listeners to play the on-demand game with the entire iTunes Store podcast directory.” —Apple patent seeks to marry TiVo, podcasts, and iTunes Store

About the photos I just posted to Flickr...

Those of you who read or subscribe to my tumblog may be wondering about all the Flickr photos that just showed up here. Well, these were taken during a trip my girlfriend and I took to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City just after Christmas. Some of these are rather nice and I had totally neglected to share them via Flickr. Enjoy! - BK
