At the June 2004 WWDC, Jobs blew away the MSFT engineers in attendance by demonstrating lightning fast Spotlight searches on Tiger (OSX 10.4).

The court-released MSFT emails show how flabbergasted they were, and the imperative of getting the Tiger preview DVDs back to Redmond for reverse engineering. Comments by MSFT’s Jim Allchin and Lenn Pryor were priceless.

Here’s Pryor: ” You will have to take Vic’s disk…I am not giving mine up. ;) Tonight I got on corpnet, hooked up Mail.app to my Exchange server and then downloaded all of my mail into the local file store. I did system wide queries against docs, contacts, apps, photos, music, and my Microsoft email on a Mac. It was f*cking amazing. It is like I just got a free pass to Longhorn land today.”

Here’s Allchin: “Yes. I know. It is hard to take. I don’t believe we will have search this fast.”

After word spread that Prince covered Radiohead’s “Creep” at Coachella, the tens of thousands who couldn’t be there ran to YouTube for a peek. Everyone was quickly denied — even Radiohead.

All videos of Prince’s unique rendition of Radiohead’s early hit were quickly taken down, leaving only a message that his label, NPG Records, had removed the clips, claiming a copyright violation. But the posted videos were shot by fans and, obviously, the song isn’t Prince’s.

In a recent interview, Thom Yorke said he heard about Prince’s performance from a text message and thought it was “hilarious.” Yorke laughed when his bandmate, guitarist Ed O’Brien, said the blocking had prevented him from seeing Prince’s version of their song. “Really? He’s blocked it?” asked Yorke, who figured it was their song to block or not. “Surely we should block it. Hang on a moment.”

Yorke added: “Well, tell him to unblock it. It’s our … song.”

The New York State Supreme Court has dealt a blow against Dell by ruling that the company and its affiliate, Dell Financial Services, engaged in fraud, false advertising, deceptive business practices, and abusive debt collection practices.

Justice Joseph Teresi ruled against the companies late last week, saying that Dell repeatedly misled customers and failed to live up to promises. The monetary damages have yet to be determined, but New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said that Dell will eventually have to pay back customers. The company will also have to turn over any “unlawfully earned” profits to the state.

“The YouTube/Viacom $1 billion copyright infringement lawsuit has been bumping along for so long now that many consumers probably suspect the whole thing is about to wrap up. Not so; in fact, the case is only just beginning. On Friday, YouTube at last submitted its reply to Viacom’s complaint, and while 90 percent of the document consists of the words “Defendants deny the allegations of paragraph xx,” the introduction is a hot one. In it, YouTube claims that its service is exactly what Congress intended to shield when it passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in 1998, and it goes on to charge that Viacom’s lawsuit “threatens the way hundreds of millions of people legitimately exchange information, news, entertainment, and political and artistic expression.” —YouTube: Viacom dumping piranhas in our DMCA safe harbor

“For the governors who attended the recent climate conference at Yale, one of the biggest political selling points for renewable energy sources was their long-term stability. In contrast to carbon-based fuels, where extraction mostly occurs overseas and for finite time periods, the sources of many forms of renewable power—solar, wind, geothermal, etc.—are widely distributed and indefinitely available. Several officials at the conference summarized these benefits of renewable power as the ability to create permanent jobs that don’t get outsourced.” —Renewable energy and the future of the datacenter

“In what is something of an armistice between the consumer electronics business (the people who make the TVs) and the cable business (the people who stream content to those TVs), Sony and six major US cable operators have inked a memorandum of understanding to use the Java-based tru2way technology. Combined with a CableCARD for decryption, the system will make two-way cable products practical, something that could cripple the existing set-top box market. And we know just how much you loved that set-top box.” —Sony, six cable companies adopt two-way CableCARD tech

“The RIAA has dropped its federal lawsuit against MediaServices, LLC, the parent company of AllOfMP3.com. In a court filing last week, the recording industry dismissed the case without prejudice (meaning that it can be filed again) but provided no information on why it was abandoning the effort now. But in comments to Ars Technica today, an RIAA spokesman indicated that the group had won, that MediaServices was out of business, and that MP3sparks was badly crippled.” —With AllOfMP3 gone and MP3sparks reeling, RIAA drops lawsuit

“The next stop was Klee’s, the Irish American Mecca of the Barnegat Bay Peninsula. Fearlessly facing a half indifferent rowdy pub crowd, Christian Beach accompanied by his Father Gorgo on Mandolin was simply world class. Few singers sound better in person than on well produced recordings. Christian is one of them. It was surreal watching Klee’s regular patrons surrender to Christian’s captivating voice and vibe. Most of the folks there probably haven’t heard live orginal acoustic music in many, many years and it was gratifying to see some calloused souls infused and nurtured with the spiritual sincerity of Christian’s sound. It was also touching to see a Father and son sharing a stage together.” —asburymusician - Seaside Music Festival Recap
